Paper Sample Book

Print Design

Paper Sample Books are some of the best places to show wild creativity, which can be seen in this fictional book for Domtar. The concept takes famous quotes from Franz Kafka and his works and turns them into a survival guide for the apocalypse. The book features several different types of folds, along with die cuts and varnishes. These include gate folds and cut outs that can be removed from the book to reveal an alternate, apocalyptic world, and small die cut folds that reveal texture or pattern. As the story progresses, the pages go from smaller and more intimate images, such as a living room and backyard, and expand to building exteriors, cityscapes, and forested landscapes. The final spread reveals the outcome of the apocalypse in an accordion fold that fades to black.

The final concept has a grungy look with blurred colors and edgy typefaces. Texture is also used to create the desired grunge effect, and repeated on each of the photos for a consistent look and feel. Curving lines continue throughout the book in the background of the text and keep the overall look unified, as well as to provide interest to keep readers turning the pages. The colors stay consistent with the dark apocalyptic style. Reds and blacks are featured prominently throughout the book to support the visual aesthetic.
